Two locations combine the mountains and the sea!
Classes and activities from May through September take place every other day at the Ikarian Centre’s campus, in the mountainous village of Arethousa. On alternate days classes are held at the Hotel Atheras, in the coastal village of Evdilos. Students may choose to stay in Evdilos or at the Centre’s guesthouse in Arethousa. On days when classes are held at the Ikarian Centre, the Centre will provide transportation for students staying at Hotel Atheras and Hotel Kerame, or other places in Evdilos, to the campus in Arethousa. Students who reside at the Centre’s guesthouse in Arethousa must rent a vehicle for transportation to Evdilos, as the distance is not walkable (8 km, 1,5 hours by foot). However, the Easter and November olive harvest courses take place ONLY on-campus, in Arethousa. During these courses, a shuttle service to Evdilos is available for students every other day after class hours.
Several classes are formed for each course, each consisting of 2-8 students at a similar skill level. The program of study is divided into 6 levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2), according to the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Courses are adapted to the individual needs and interests of each student, and are intended
for adult students of modern Greek at all levels (absolute beginner through intermediate and advanced), i.e.,
for adults of any age who wish to begin to study Greek, or who wish to improve their Greek.
for teachers of ancient or modern Greek,
for interpreters, and translators.
Our instructors are young but experienced as teachers of Greek as a foreign language. Grammar and vocabulary are taught via the use of texts and materials written by the Centre. Emphasis is placed on the development of listening and speaking skills. New material (both in grammar and vocabulary) is mastered by students with the use of word games and verbal exercises.
The small class size (2 – 8 individuals) ensures that every student will have the chance to speak and improve their language skills in the course of each hour of instruction. During the weeks of instruction students will also have the opportunity to discover some of the less well-known aspects of contemporary Greek life, through songs, music, conversation, presentations and assignments.
Students may choose between on-campus accommodation at the Centre’s guesthouse in Arethousa, the hotels Atheras or Kerame or other hotels and rooms for rent in the area. On-campus accommodation starts at 175€/session at the Centre’s guesthouse in Arethousa. However, the guesthouse is located in a remote spot and beginning in the summer of 2017 shuttle service will not be provided. For this reason students who wish to stay at the centre must arrange their own transport. Scooters, ATVs and cars are all available from the car rentals of the island.
Most days the lessons take place in the morning (9:00 – 12:00), or noon (12:10 to 15:10); After morning classes end, students have free time, to eat, study and rest. In the late afternoon – evening several activities are planned, such as singing lessons, conversation classes, lectures, dance courses and film screenings.

Rural traditions are still very much alive in Ikaria. Easter, a springtime celebration, is celebrated by local communities with great festive spirit. Students will learn about Easter traditions while participating in them. Activities that are usually arranged within the framework of the courses and which are mentioned in the Centre’s main programme, like walking in the mountain and Greek cooking lessons, will also be organized. As always within the course framework, students will have the opportunity to meet with and talk to local residents… Read more
