Ready to take a Greek language courses on the island of Ikaria, but you still have some questions? Perhaps you can find the answers here.
How to get to Ikaria
We have a separate page about how to get to Ikaria, it’s a good idea to read it. It’s true that it’s not that easy to reach the island from a European city in one day. Usually people overnight in Athens, either on the way to the island, on the way back or both. However there are some tricks:
- Try www.aegeanair.com for a flight directly from your city (in Europe) to Ikaria. Since Aegean Air flies to the island, you might find a reasonably priced ticket from your city to Ikaria, with one connection in Athens.
- Try to find a low fare flight to Mykonos, Samos or another nearby island. Mykonos and Samos are 1,5 hours away Ikaria by ferry (www.hsw.gr)
- Check flights through Thessaloniki. There is a carrier flying from Thessaloniki to Ikaria (www.astra-airlines.gr)
When do I have to be on the island in order to attend the lessons?
It’s best to arrive on the island one day before the beginning of the course and leave the day after the course ends. The first lesson takes place in the afternoon, so you can probably catch the morning plane to Ikaria and be on-time for the lessons. You are welcome to check-in or check-out on campus a bit later or earlier, according to your trip schedule, without any extra charge. However, we can only host you a few more days before or after the course, if we have a room available. We can’t confirm this until 2 weeks before the beginning of your course. But don’t worry: 2 weeks is enough time to find something else, unless you are visiting Ikaria at the end of July or during August.
What do I need to bring with me?
Something you can use both to connect to the Internet and to listen to audio files. A part of students’ homework is to listen to audio files and practice reading and listening. We don’t spend time on computers in class, as we prefer to have our students talk more. Also a pair of hiking shoes, if you want to hike on the mountain, and a bathing suit, even in the winter (!), if you want to swim in the hot springs of the island.
Do I need to rent a car if I stay on-campus?
The campus is located in a remote spot, but this makes it a unique place for relaxing and learning. You don’t have to rent a car or a scooter. There is a car without a driver at students’ disposal, if you want explore the island with the others. In the summer (June, July and August) we do take our students after lessons to the nearby beach of Karavostamo. We often go out to eat and drink together, students and teachers, according to our mood. But in the end, there is not too much time for wandering around. The program is focused on learning!
However, if you want you can reserve a car or a scooter
