Solo travel Ikaria – Accommodation & activities

Are you a solo traveler? Solo travel Ikaria with a stay at our guesthouse, join our activities, get to know the island better and make new friends! A fellow traveler also welcome!

rooms in ikaria, Ikarian Centre

Our guesthouse is an ideal accommodation if you solo travel Ikaria as it offers both, accommodation in Ikaria and activities that will allow you to make new acquaintances, learn more about the island of Ikaria and thus spend your holidays creatively and pleasantly.

The guesthouse consists of a complex of 4 independent buildings located in a wooded area 1.5 Km outside the mountain settlement of Arethousa and 3 Km above the seaside settlement of Karavostamo. The view on one side is the open sea, all the way to the shores of Turkey. Turn to the other side and you face the peak of Mount Atheras, rising a thousand meters above the sea. Predators fly across the sky during the day and the galaxy appears in all its glory on clear nights. The guesthouse complex is built with full respect for the local architectural tradition and include 9 independent rooms, each with its own independent external entrance, equipped kitchenette and bathroom. So the groups of guests that are formed each time are small, they do not exceed 9 – 10 people. There are several common indoor or covered spaces (a library – reading room, a common kitchen and pergolas) and many courtyards, so that one can have a healthy socialization with the other guests, also can isolate somewhere alone.

Ikaria has recently become known as the blue zone, for the longevity of its inhabitants, who seem to forget to die! The morphology of the island with its high mountains and steep paths, the local diet, the relative isolation, the slow pace of life, and the relations of the inhabitants of the local communities are some characteristics of the island that may explain this paradox.

Activities -Solo travel Ikaria

The activities we organize will allow you to meet other people, get to know the island a little better and thus make creative use of your holidays.

Traditional dance lessons

Traditional Greek Dance lessons are given for an hour or two in the afternoon. In the lessons we teach the local dance (Ikariotiko); also dances that are danced in the traditional festivals (panigiri) of Ikaria. After the lessons you can try to dance in a local panigiri! The dance teacher is from Ikaria and also teaches traditional dances in local dance clubs.

Excursions in Ikaria

Excursions to other areas of the island, sightseeing, archaeological sites and museums combined with swimming in the sea, or eating are also organized. In early spring or late autumn and winter we swim in the “thermal springs“, the springs that spring up hot water directly to the sea, and keep the sea water always warm!

Discussions and projections

Slide shows and short lectures in English / Greek about the history of the island and contemporary Ikaria.

Walking tours

The guesthouse is located in a mountainous area of Ikaria. A network of paths and dirt roads is easily accessible for short and longer walks. During each walk our visitors will experience the unique nature of the island and a landscape that is constantly changing: from a dry barren mountain with rocks carved by the surrealist artist “wind”, to dense forest, small lakes and small river beds. In the background most of the time: the sea.

Visits to local artisans

Visits to wineries combined with tasting, also visits to other professionals of the island. Ikaria is well known for its honey, it’s herbs and its wild goats. This is how we visit beekeepers, livestock farmers, herb and essential oil producers

Cooking evenings

We also organize cooking evenings where we all cook local recipes or Greek dishes together, under the supervision of a local cook. Then we all eat together, accompanied by local wine, what we made! The evenings are often closed with a traditional dance.

Greek language evenings

Our foreign visitors in one afternoon can learn to read the Greek alphabet and understand some magical phrases that may help them in their future travels in Greece. Of course this is not a Greek language course…. Those who want to progress with Greek can participate in one of the Greek language courses of Ikarian Center
