Basic Greek

The courses are aimed at those who can at least read and write Greek, also form and understand simple sentences in Greek, can communicate in simple situations such as buying an ice cream from a kiosk and can introduce themselves and their family answering questions like “Πού μένεις;” “Από πού είσαι;” “Πώς σε λένε;” “Έχεις παιδιά;” “Καταλαβαίνεις Αγγλικά;” but they cannot describe some simple things they did yesterday or will do tomorrow because they cannot use basic verbs such as έχω, τρώω, πίνω, ακούω, καταλαβαίνω, γράφω, στέλνω, δίνω, πηγαίνω, παίρνω, αγοράζω, διαβάζω in the past tense or the future.

Curriculum – goal

In the courses, different classes are created depending on the actual level, needs and ability of students to quickly assimilate new knowledge. Each class consists of a maximum of 4 students.

Classes with low familiarity with Greek

If students have only a little familiarity with the Greek language, i.e. they can read and write Greek, they can form simple sentences, they know how to conjugate some verbs in the present tense (I am / you are … or I want / you want …) and they are relatively familiar with the genitives and the definite article in various cases “I know Helen” “Mihalis lives in America” then:

Students continue to practice how to introduce themselves in Greek (My name is.. I am from / it / it.. I live in / in / in …) Through this process there is a repetition in the genders of nouns and adjectives, the articles and cases (John knows Helen), the personal pronoun in the nominative and the declension of the verb in the active voice (do you understand Greek?). They also practice using the possessive pronoun (my house), using the personal pronoun in the general (I like) and accusative (I want it), forming the plural of common nouns and adjectives (my friends are good people), general (John’s book), adverbial (John, do you want coffee?) and with comparisons (John is taller than George). Fast-moving classes can have an introduction to the use of the simple subjunctive (I want to buy bread) and the future immediate future (tomorrow I will buy bread)

Finally, a vocabulary is developed so that they can introduce themselves or their family, describe the appearance of people and things, talk about their participation in daily activities, express liking or disliking something.

Classes with better familiarity with Greek

If the students can easily read short texts, write in Greek and be familiar with the declension of the noun, the adjective and the verb so that they can compose active sentences in the singular and plural with verbs of all conjugations (John loves black cats / John, do you buy books?), they can describe some of their daily activities (in the morning I wake up at 7:00, drink coffee and eat), they can describe the appearance of people or things (John is tall, the car is expensive), to they use the possessive pronoun (this is my book, his father lives in Athens) then:

In the lessons they will briefly repeat the active sentence in the present tense with active verbs of all conjugations (οι μαθητές δεν οδηγούν αυτοκίνητα). Emphasis will be placed on familiarization with the use of the subjunctive (πρέπει να πάω στον γιατρό σήμερα), the simple future (αύριο θα πάω στον γιατρό) and the formation of the past tense of the active voice (χθες πήγα στον γιατρό / έστειλα το γράμμα πριν τρεις μέρες) .

In addition, the students will practice using the plural (οι μαθητές) and the genitive in the sentence (τα βιβλία της Μαρίας), the declension of the passive voice in the first conjugation (έρχομαι – κοιμάμαι), they will have a contact with the passive syntax (οι εφημερίδες διαβάζονται στο ιντερνέτ) and they will have a use of the personal pronoun in the accusative and genitive as an indirect and direct object (σου το λέω κάθε μέρα!)

Through work with texts and vocabulary games, a vocabulary useful for various communicative situations of everyday life is developed. Please note that by “every day life” we don’t mean the everyday life of a tourist in Greece. We do not focus on teaching phrases to communicate with the waiter at the tavern or the receptionist at the hotel.
