Grecia en estado puro

Response from Ikarian Centre

I have participated four times – at least – in the Greek language courses held by the Ikarian Centre at Arethousa, Ikaria. I have enjoyed my stays very much and I have learned a lot.
The teaching methods are very efficient; at the same time the atmosphere that characterises the lessons, is relaxed, warm, helpful, full of humour and laughter, and so are the excursions, the meals, and the conversations (in Greek, from day one!) with the other students and the teachers.
Arethousa is a lovely place and the accommodation at the Centre’s premises is very comfortable. Ikaria is an exciting Greek island with a varied natural scenery, from wild mountain ridges to beautiful beaches with serene turquoise blue waters.
I recommend everybody with an interest in Greek language and culture and everyday life to go to Ikaria and participate in the lessons and other activities offered by the Greek language centre.

Full immersion on site in modern Greek: an adventure never to forget

In the summer of 2012 I spent two weeks on Ikaria during which I followed an intensive course of modern Greek at the Ikarian Centre. It was an extraordinary experience for several reasons: the fantastic surroundings of the island, the idyllic location of dormitories and classrooms, the interesting and most diverse fellow students, the course’s extra’s like dance classes and the introduction to local traditions and, last but not least, the acquired knowledge. I’m still in touch with some of the people I met there and we all look back at the time spent on Ikaria as a lovely, dreamy memory. Finally, as a university graduate in ancient Greek it was simply marvelous to see the resemblances (and the differences) between two languages time-wise so far away and yet so close. I’d definitely recommend a stay on this island with all the benefits the Ikarian Centre can offer you.

I spent two weeks in Ikaria having had the program recommended to me by a colleague. I’m a professor of ancient Greek and so know something both about learning and teaching languages: I thought the course was fantastic. The teaching style was dynamic and thorough. The teachers demanded a lot, but it never felt like too much and this they did always with patience and good humour. Their teaching style was enviable (to me as a teacher of languages) and

The Real Thing

It was not a good idea for me to come to Ikaria By airplane because Arethousa is so far away from the airport and I was afraid all the time in my taxidrive!I think that the taxijourney was very expencive too. I have Holiday now and the better way for me is the boat to Evdilo. Taxidrivers in the airport did not know where is Ikariancenter and I did´nt know the name of the village Arethousa so one of them

I have been learning greek for quite some years now and have always wanted to go on a summer school where you can take an intensive language class, however most such classes last for a month or two which can be hard to combine with work or other plans. Luckily I got to know about the greek language course in Ikaria through some people in my greek class in Norway. Some of them had been to Ikaria many times and

My two fabulous weeks at Ikaria

What can I say about my experience that nobody has already expressed? For me, when the time came to leave, I couldn’t remember what life was like anywhere else in the world. But that’s just it… in Ikaria, you are able to forget the world and focus on what it is that you came for… Each morning, I awoke to the soft sound of bells on sheep and to the crows of roosters. The sun bled in through my window

I attended a two-week Greek course in Thessaloniki and I must say that I am very satisfied. I had studied the language two hours a week for only 8 months before I arrived in Greece and I wasn’t really able to speak or understand properly. Now at the end of the course I can communicate much better with the Greeks and also my comprehension has improved a lot. I was one of the students with less vocabulary and grammar and

Course evalutation

I can fully recommend studying Greek at the Ikarian Centre. Ikaria is a great place to spend time. The centre is in a rural location in the mountains, not too far from the town, Evdilos, and the seaside. The scenery is amazing and there is lots to see on the island – several excursions were organised. The food is also very good. I found the courses very constructive. The courses at the Ikarian Centre are very much focused on on

Studying Greek at Ikarian Centre

I have been studying modern greek for almost 4 years at the Hellenic centre in London- www.helleniccentre.org/greekcourses.htm. I enjoyed this so much, I wanted to advance my greek by doing a more intensive course in Greece for two weeks- at the same time getting away from it all on what was reputed to be a left wing, slow-to-respond island. The Ikarian Centre was great. In a most beautiful location with extraordinary tranquility, but at the same time lots of daily

July 16, 2006 We’ve finished the first 5 days of classes. As someone who is not facile with languages, not to mention starting one at my age, I must say that the methods they use here really make learning Greek possible, if you work at it. The hard part is continuing it when you leave, but when you’re here, it’s pretty much an immersion experience. We have about 10 students and 2 teachers. This allows for a lot of attention
